What makes Sunday School at a progressive church different than Sunday School at other churches? It is not necessarily the curriculum that is used in Sunday School, but the manner in which it is taught that sets a progressive Sunday School ministry apart from its counterparts.

Our motto at Different Voice is: “Embrace life. Nurture Spirituality. Inspire change.” These are also worthy goals for a progressive Sunday School ministry. In Part 1 of this series, I explored ways that progressive Sunday School ministries embrace life.

A progressive Sunday School ministry also nurtures spirituality.

  • We recognize each person is on a unique faith journey. We provide opportunities for spiritual growth and transformation, while accepting each person regardless of where he or she is at on his or her journey of faith.
  • We believe that God loves each one of us unconditionally. We repeatedly offer assurance that before we are even aware of it, God’s grace is extended to us and there is nothing we can do to stop God loving us.
  • We understand that ultimately, God is mystery. We teach and use the many names by which God is known.
  • We realize there are many paths to God. As Christians, we have found God through the life and teachings of Jesus. However, we recognize there are multiple paths to God and understand that we can learn from other faith traditions.
  • We believe that the stories of our faith in the Bible provide a strong faith foundation and help connect us to God and to each other. Recognizing the humanity of its authors, we take the Bible seriously but not literally. Use of the Bible and its stories and teachings is central to our educational ministries.
  • We understand that we are all still learning. We provide a learning environment where asking questions is encouraged. We accept that often there is more than one answer to a question. We admit when we do not know the answer.
  • We recognize that people learn in different ways. We offer a variety of activities and experiences that meet the needs of multiple intelligences or learning styles.
  • We believe that God has a personal relationship with each one of us. We model a variety of prayer methods, encouraging persons to talk and listen to God. We invite each person to look for, listen to and respond to God’s call in her or his life.

How does your Sunday School ministry nurture spirituality?
