Part two of our 3-part series continues with some additional recommendations for progressive-friendly resources. (In case you missed it, here's part 1.)

  • Sojourners - You're probably already very familiar with the wonderful magazine called Sojourners, but have you ever taken a look at some of the resources they've produced? Their study guides on topics such as immigration, nonviolence, and Christians and the Middle East are terrific short-term studies, and include both articles from past Sojourners issues as well as study questions.
  • Bible Workbench - Seeking a very affordable, very simple to lead, lectionary-based curriculum for younger or older teens or adults? Bible Workbench provides a downloadable curriculum that can be used in either a traditional Sunday school class or in a mid-week small group session. The emphasis in all of their studies is on the learner and his or her experience; in essence, the learner is the curriculum. It includes fairly extensive Bible background material, and more questions, activities, extra readings, etc. than you can use in a session. I've never personally used this material, but I'd sure like to some day!
  • JustFaith Ministries - For individuals in your congregations who are interested in going deeper—much, much deeper—into justice issues, the JustFaith programs are worth serious consideration. Serious, though, is the key word; these are intense (and fairly expensive) programs that require a great deal of time on the part of the participants. Yet their curricula is exceptional and is updated every few years with up-to-date statistics and information. With both a Roman Catholic and Ecumenical program, JustFaith is a clear winner for congregations seeking to do justice.
  • Unity Resources - When Bishop John Shelby Spong is asked where one can find a church or denomination like the one he describes in his books, he encourages those present to take a look at Unity, a Christian denomination that teaches a "positive, practical, progressive approach to Christianity based on the teachings of Jesus and the power of prayer." Unity's various resources would likely be considered too radical or liberal in most congregations, but for those who have difficulty finding resources that fit certain classes or groups in their congregation, Unity may meet your unique needs.

Is there a progressive-friendly source you wouldn't want to live without? Share it on our blog or email your recommendation to us.
