What makes Sunday School at a progressive church different than Sunday School at other churches? Given that there are limited options available for progressive curriculum, particularly for children, in many cases progressive congregations are using “mainstream curriculum”. (We await, with anticipation, the children’s curriculum being developed by The Center for Progressive Christianity.) Therefore, it is not the curriculum that is used in Sunday School, but the manner in which it is taught that sets a progressive Sunday School ministry apart from its counterparts.
Our motto at Different Voice is: “Embrace life. Nurture Spirituality. Inspire change.” These are also worthy goals for a progressive Sunday School ministry. In this three part series, I will explore in more depth what this might look like.
A progressive Sunday School ministry embraces life.
- We recognize that life is a gift from God. We offer thanks to God for our blessings.
- We rejoice in the life given to all of God’s children, regardless of age, skin color, socioeconomic status, political affiliation, ability to sit still, or any other classification that we use to categorize each other. Our doors are open to all.
- We affirm the abilities and talents of each person. We look for the good in each child, youth and adult, recognizing that everyone has something to share.
- As a Christian community, we celebrate with one another, laugh with one another and grieve with one another. We are a family, supporting each other always.
- We accept that we are called to uphold the life of all people, reaching out and ministering to those in need. We extend our ministry beyond the church walls and work for social justice.
- We live in the awareness of God’s love wherever we are and whatever we are doing. We look for opportunities to share God’s love with others throughout the week, not just on Sunday.
- We recognize our responsibility as caretakers of God’s creation. We educate ourselves about environmental issues, live as good stewards of God’s world and encourage others to do so.
How does your Sunday School ministry embrace life?
