Sunday School is now underway. The flurry of activity to find enough teachers, rooms, curriculum and supplies has calmed down at least a little bit. As Christian educators, it may be tempting to settle back and let the Sunday School teachers take it from here. Of course, you will continue to be available if they come to you with a question, but unless you hear from them, your work here is done…

Yes, it’s tempting, and in the short-term it may be a viable approach. Long-term, however, your job will be much easier if you continue to check in on Sunday School teachers.

  • Without hovering, simply let them know that you are available to them as a resource. (They are not alone.)
  • Ask teachers what would make teaching easier for them. Even if they do not have specific requests, they will appreciate being asked.
  • Continue to offer teacher training throughout the year. This could take various forms, including sending emails to teachers containing tips and ideas, providing information and financial resources to allow teachers to attend workshops in your area, or gathering teachers together (perhaps at a coffeehouse) to brainstorm about specific issues that may arise.
  • Provide your teachers with information about Different Voice, where they can find teacher training tips, ministry ideas and inspiration. (Yes, I am biased about the value of this suggestion!)
  • Appreciate your teachers. Everyone likes to know that someone has noticed the work they are doing. Instead of waiting until Christmas to thank your teachers, schedule several times throughout the year to say thanks.
  • Take some preventative measures to keep Sunday School teachers from feeling isolated from other adults. Encourage community building.

Sunday School teachers nurture the children, youth or adults in their classes. Remember that teachers need nurturing, too.
