The Arrival
Economic woes, global warming,
war, make that wars, poverty,
homelessness, human trafficking,
domestic violence, cancer,
unemployment, mental illness,
AIDS, gangs, illiteracy…and more.
Amidst all of the stuff of life,
with the flip of the calendar page,
arrives Christmas Day. Christmas.
Once again, 365 days after the last one,
Christmas.
Depending on one’s circumstances, Christmas may…
boldly burst forth with the sounds of children playing,
the laughter of loved ones gathering, and the rustle of gift wrap.
gently glide into being upon the wings of a silent night.
march its way in, arriving persistently amidst sadness, illness, weariness…
appear to be a mirage, appealing yet remaining out of reach.
pass by unrecognized, a day much like every other day.
Regardless of one’s circumstances, Christmas invites you to…
remember God’s immeasurable love for you.
find joy awaiting discovery in unlikely places.
hope, even when things seem hopeless.
experience peace – long for it, work for it.
give of yourself – whatever you have to offer.
listen for angels calling you to join their hymn of praise.
follow the example of Jesus, born so many years ago.
love fully – when it’s easy and when it’s challenging.
keep its message in your heart for the next 365 days.
Have a blessed Christmas ~ Sally Hoelscher
