There are many wonderful resources that are especially well-suited for progressive churches, but so far there are no catalogs that pull all of these resources together. And, since many of the more progressive companies do not have advertising budgets the size of publishing behemoths like Zondervan or LifeWay, you may never have heard of some of the great sources out there. In this 3-part series, we'll point you to some of these lesser-known alternatives.

  • Alternatives for Simple Living - Many individuals know about Alternatives because of their annual Advent resource, Who's Birthday is it Anyway?, but Alternatives has been a terrific distributor of some of the best resources available on topics related to simple living, alternative celebrations, ecology, social justice, and so on. They recently merged their e-store with The Simple LIving Network, and it's very important to link to their e-store via the Alternatives site (use this link) so that they get credit for the sale.
  • Mennonite Media - I have used and recommended resources from this source for many years, and I've rarely been disappointed. If you're seeking affordable resources with strong peace and justice emphases, then you need to stop by.
  • United Church of Canada - Many individuals in the United States are unfamiliar with the United Church of Canada, one of the largest Canadian Christian churches, formed after four denominations merged. They tend to take liberal theological and social positions, and their relatively small size makes it impossible for them to produce a lot of resources. Still, their site is worth visiting to see what resources they recommend to their churches, and they do produce some very worth resources as well.
  • Wood Lake Books - their mission statement should tell you quite a bit: " Our mission, undertaken through publishing, is to retrieve, reclaim, and renew the Christian tradition of living radical and inclusive love." Combine that with the knowledge that study guides for Marcus Borg's books are published there, and you'll understand why we're fond of them.

Is there a progressive-friendly source you wouldn't want to live without? Share it on our blog or email your recommendation to us.
