If you step out of your house at this time of year, it is tempting to believe that Christmas is over. Christmas decorations are being stowed away and Valentine’s Day merchandise is appearing in stores. I am reluctant to let go of Christmas so easily, preferring to observe the liturgical calendar, according to which we are still in the Christmas season until the celebration of Epiphany on Tuesday. This weekend I encourage you to continue feeling the spirit of Christmas and look forward to Epiphany.
Reflecting on the celebration of Epiphany and remembering the visit of the wise men, I understandably begin thinking about journeys. Although the wise men traveled together, I am sure the experience was different for each of them. Likewise, each of us is on a unique, personal, spiritual journey. Yet none of us travel alone. We travel with our family and friends, we travel together as Christian Educators, we travel with the persons we are in ministry with, and with each person our lives touch – interconnected by God’s grace and love in seen and unseen ways. As we begin a new year, I celebrate that we each have a Different Voice and that we are journeying together.
Journeys
Wise men following a star
Searching for Jesus
So they could worship him
They journeyed from afar
They asked for help in finding him
They brought gifts to honor him
Ordinary people trying to find the path
Looking for Jesus
So we can know him
How far will we journey?
Are we brave enough to ask for help?
What gifts do we bring?
