I can honestly say that I have never heard a song written about the two women fighting over the same baby and King Solomon’s decision to cut the baby in half. (1 Kings 3:16-28) Before I heard the song, “Real Love and the Whole Truth,” I might not have believed that a children’s song could be written about this rather odd story. And yet, Richard Bruxvoort Colligan has managed to write a song that is fun, interesting, appropriate for children and conveys the importance of telling the truth.
“Real Love and the Whole Truth” is one of the eighteen songs on the CD Seeds of Faith, by the River’s Voice. When I find a CD of children’s music that I would listen to even when no children are around, I consider that a great find. Seeds of Faith is such a CD. All of the songs succeed in presenting familiar Bible stories in a fresh and engaging way. One of my favorites is “The Ten Commandments Song” which reminds us, “Don’t fool yourself. There’s only one God.”
The River’s Voice is the name of the husband and wife team of Richard and Trish Bruxvoort Colligan. Both Richard and Trish are talented songwriters and musicians. As The River’s Voice, they combine their talents, and the result is worthy.
Although Seeds of Faith is worthwhile on its own, there is also a Song-tivity Book to accompany it. This activity book provides a summary of the Bible story, reflection questions and an activity for each song. The book also contains music with guitar chords and a reproducible lyric booklet.
On The River’s Voice website, you can listen to parts of each song from Seeds of Faith. Take some time and take a listen. I think you’ll be glad you did!
