Since it is Thursday, it must be time for a book review! Today’s review is a 4-for-1 special. Dawn Young (Director of Christian Education for the Louisiana Conference) has reviewed four fiction series for us. These series are all appropriate for book club reading, and Dawn offers suggestions for using each series for this purpose. If your church doesn’t currently have a book club, consider starting one. You can find information about starting a book club here. Although not church-specific, the process is easily adaptable to the church setting. One benefit of reading a series of books is that it spares you the process of choosing a new book every month!

The Ladies’ Detective Agency series - Yes, I am well aware of the adage “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” But when trapped in the Cincinnati airport for 30 hours, adages go right out the window. So of course I purchased a book with the title The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. It had that title and a hut with a thatched roof on the cover. What could I do?

Mitford Series - The Mitford series of books by Jan Karon follows the life of Father Tim, the priest at Lord’s Chapel in Mitford. The series follows Father Tim as he goes from bachelor to husband, from active pastor to retired pastor, and from a man with limited family to an extended and expanding family.

Miss Julia series - If there was any series of books that teetered on the edge of stereotype, it would probably be the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross. However, while they teeter, they never quite go over the abyss. Miss Julia Springer, formerly Mrs. Wesley Lloyd Springer, is plunged into stately and well-heeled widowhood with the untimely death of her banker husband.

Ladies of Covington series - Hannah, Grace and Amelia are the Ladies of Covington, a series of books authored by Joan Medlicott. Through the tribulations and trials that come with spending a long time on earth, they end up in a Pennsylvania boardinghouse, and are miserable. Although in part their misery is due to their circumstances, much of the misery is because of the location. This is no place for anyone to end up, because it signals the end.
