Scraps of paper...stickies...Daytimers...PDAs...multiple calendars...browser bookmarks... all these and more are the common ways we try to keep track of the vast amount of information that comes at us each day. Some systems work better than others at reducing clutter (e.g. PDAs or iPhone) but those have their downsides too (e.g. dead batteries, forgetting to sync with your computer).

Now, I am not an expert on information management by a long-shot, but I do have several digital tools that help me to stay organized and to file away information in such a way that I can usually find it again. Among my favorites is a little application called Evernote...

Evernote is both a web-based tool and an application for your computer (PC or Mac) that sync together easily. In Evernote, you can create notes with anything in them that you want—lists of phone numbers, clippings of web pages, audio recordings, photos, scanned documents, handwritten notes, and more. All of these get indexed and have "tagging" capabilities so that you can find exactly what it is you need quickly. The software is amazing—it even has the ability to recognize and analyze your handwriting! Your notes can be made...

  • private (your eyes only) for things like church to-do lists, quotes you like, sermon ideas, passwords, text from an article you were reading, daily journals or logs of your activities, pictures you find on the web, etc.
  • public (things you are willing to share with the one or more others) like notes for teachers, ideas a task team has generated, worship team reminders, family updates and photos, staff minutes, a series of links you want someone to visit, etc.

Since your notes reside both on your computer and on the web, you can access them from your computer or any computer with an Internet connection (as long as you remember to keep your notes in sync, which is extremely simple—just click one button.) I've only begun to describe the many features and uses of this free, yes—FREE!—software (you can upgrade to a paid version with more storage if you need it.) Check out Evernote and see what ideas it inspires in you!
