Dear Sunday School teachers,

children writingWe appreciate the time you take each week to prepare a lesson for our class. Hopefully, some of the things you teach us about God and Jesus and the Bible will stick with us as we grow. What we will definitely remember is having you as our teacher.

We appreciate the “little things” that adults do to make us feel special, such as:

  • Knowing all of our names – We all like to be called by our own name (not the name of our older sibling, or the name of another child, or “the girl in the purple shirt”). When we are called by name, it provides us with a sense of identity and sends the message that “my teacher knows who I am”.
  • Making a photo montage – We like to have our picture taken, particularly if you allow us to ham it up a bit. Posting the pictures in our classroom helps us feel a sense of belonging. (Putting names beside the pictures will help you learn and remember our names!)
  • Sending us mail – We do not receive a lot of mail. Sending a postcard midweek can make a big impression. It doesn’t have to be a long letter, just a “Hello” or “I’m glad that you are in our Sunday School class” will let us know that you think about us during the week, as well as on Sunday morning.
  • Taking an interest in our interests – Make time to talk to each one of us every week about subjects other than “church stuff”. We want to tell you about the soccer game we played in, or the dance class we are taking, or the antics of our family dog. When you listen to our stories, it makes us feel like you care about us. If you remember what we are interested in from one week to the next, we will think that you are very cool. (Feel free to jot down notes after class to help you remember that Emily is taking swimming lessons and Jake’s family just adopted a kitten.)

We’ll see you in Sunday School!

Love,
Your Sunday School Kids

P.S. We’ve heard that youth and adults appreciate many of these same things.
