At Different Voice, creation-care is one of our core values. What does it mean to translate this belief into action as we do ministry?

One suggestion is to encourage your Sunday School teachers and youth leaders not to choose activities that waste food. (Encouragement includes modeling this behavior ourselves.) We’ve all probably done such activities, perhaps when we were children ourselves. Think about macaroni necklaces, potato stamps and games that involve passing marshmallows or tossing eggs. While these activities can be fun, consider the unspoken message such activities convey about food. When we utilize food as a craft supply or a game prop, we are presenting food as an item available in such excess that it can be used as a craft supply without much thought.

The reality is that there are many hungry people in God’s world. Avoiding making macaroni necklaces is not going to make that food available to hungry people. However, making intentional choices about how food is used in our activities can send a deliberate message of sensitivity to the needs of others.

Activities involving food can provide excellent learning opportunities. As stewards of God’s creation, we have a responsibility to choose those activities wisely.
