VBSOkay, I know what you are probably thinking… Vacation Bible School is done for this year. It will not happen again until next summer. And right now I am busy with getting Sunday School started. I do not have time to plan next year’s VBS now!

I agree. It is too early to plan for next year’s VBS. But now, when the Vacation Bible School experience is still in your mind, is a great time to reflect on how VBS went this year. If you haven’t already, take some time to evaluate the VBS program at your church. You might want to gather a few people who were involved with this year’s VBS and have a brainstorming session. (I recommend an informal gathering rather than a formal meeting…perhaps at a coffee house.)

  • What do you do well? What would you like to do differently?
  • Are you satisfied with the curriculum that you have been using? Is the theology of the curriculum a good fit for your church? (See Questions to Ask Your Curriculum.)
  • There are many possibilities for scheduling VBS – daytime, evening, every day for a week, weekly for 4 to 6 weeks, weekends, and so forth. Is your chosen schedule working well, or is it time to consider a change?
  • What age groups do you include in Vacation Bible School? Have you had good attendance throughout the age ranges, or do you notice an absence of a particular age group? Are you interested in expanding VBS and offering programs for youth and adults as well as children?
  • Have you been successful in recruiting people to help with VBS? What might make it easier to recruit leaders? Do you provide adequate training and support for VBS leaders?

As you brainstorm about these topics and others, make sure that someone takes notes. File them away. In a couple of months, when fall activities are well underway, take a look at the notes and begin making plans to make next year’s Vacation Bible School the best ever!
