The beginning of a new Sunday School year is a good time to remind teachers about the importance of learning the names of all the students in their class. It seems like a small thing, but regardless of our age, we all appreciate it when someone remembers our name.
In addition to the Sunday School teachers knowing class members’ names, it is important for class members to know one another’s names. Again, this is often something we take for granted. However, it takes repetition to learn names and often, this is overlooked among other Sunday School activities. Children and youth, especially, I have found, will participate in a group without being concerned that they do not know everyone. (Four weeks into last school year, my 15 year old son still did not know his locker partners name. This did not seem to concern him…)
Here are a few ways to help your class members get to know each other:
Use silly games. Games are a fun and non-threatening way to learn names. Kids, of course, like games – the sillier the better! Don’t be afraid to use silly games with youth and adults, too. Adults and youth can usually be talked into participating in a silly game to learn each other’s names. (They will often enjoy the game, though they may not admit that fact.) Two of my favorite name games are Alphabet Adjectives and Blanket Challenge.
Take pictures. Take a picture of each member of your class and post the photos on a bulletin board or poster. Add each person’s name next to his or her photo. Sneaking a look at the photos can be an embarrassment-free way to remember somebody’s name. For younger children, use the photos to play an easy review game. (“Place your hand on your knee if you know the name of this person,” etc.)
Use nametags. Many people dislike wearing nametags. Most people, however, recognize that it is a good idea, particularly as a class begins meeting. Many churches provide nametags for members. If your church provides nametags, encourage class members to wear them and have extra nametags on hand for visitors.
When we take the time to learn everyone’s name, it increases the sense of community among group members.
