The summer months are a good time to look at the Sunday school schedule and think creatively about the options available to you in Fall and beyond. One of those options is to hold a special event or study a special theme on the 5th Sunday of the month. All classes for all ages would engage in the event or study the topic.
Here are just a few possibilities that could be adapted for your setting:
- Social Justice Day - Plan a time when all persons in the congr
- egation would explore biblical themes of social justice and actions they can take to increase peace and justice in the world.
- Intergenerational activity - Rather than holding separate classes as usual, the 5th Sunday could be an opportunity for a special intergenerational event, such as an Advent Craft Festival or a musical put on by the children's classes.
- Creation Care Day - The 5th Sunday could be a day when all persons reflect on environmental stewardship.
- Missions Sunday - All classes could engage in or plan a service project, hear a guest speaker from a local assistance agency, learn about a mission project the congregation supports, or share stories about the ways the participants are making a difference in the world.
- Hospitality Sunday - Members of the congregation could use the Fifth Sunday to learn about the biblical theme of hospitality and how to welcome and include newcomers into the life of the congregation.
The next few 5th Sundays are Aug. 30, Nov. 29, Jan. 31, and May 30. What creative 5th Sunday ideas have you considered or tried? Share your ideas on our bog.

Re: On the 5th Sunday
We recently started offering homemade cinnamon rolls on the 5th Sunday (anyone in the congregation who likes to bake can bring them). Any group in the church who needs funds can apply for the proceeds. It usually goes to a mission project and generates from $125 - $175 per Sunday. The rolls are always gone, indicating we need more bakers! :-)
