earth and recyclingLooking for a service project for a Sunday School class? Preferably one that would last several weeks, allow class members to take ownership and be actively involved in the development and execution of the project? A class of older children, youth or adults can plan, organize and carry out a recycling awareness program for your congregation.

  1. Learn – Before educating others about a topic, make yourself knowledgeable. Have the class gather information about recycling. The Environmental Protection Agency’s website is a good place to start. Local recycling centers may be able to provide useful information, also.
  2. Brainstorm – Generate a list of ways that the class could use the knowledge they now have to increase awareness and support of recycling. Remember that when brainstorming, all ideas are accepted – the time for evaluation of ideas comes later.
  3. Decide – Use the ideas generated during the previous step to choose a project. The class might choose to focus on the church’s recycling efforts or on providing information and opportunities for church members to examine their personal recycling habits.
  4. Plan – Have the class develop a plan to carry out the project that has been chosen. Encourage them to list the steps necessary to accomplish their goal. Identify a timeline for each step, and a person or persons who will be responsible for making sure that the plan is followed.
  5. Act – Implement the plan. Be flexible! Modify as necessary.
  6. Evaluate – What were the results of the project? What did we accomplish? Are there things we could improve?
  7. Affirm – Acknowledge the accomplishments of the class. Being good caretakers of God’s creation and encouraging others to do likewise is definitely something to celebrate!
